Metro & Brick Tiles: Classic Styles for Creative Combinations
What's driving the renewed popularity of subway and brick-effect tiling in British homes? Consider how these classic formats bridge traditional architecture with contemporary living requirements. Metro tiles originally lined London Underground stations, chosen for durability and easy maintenance. Today's versions maintain these practical benefits while offering expanded design possibilities. Metro tiles traditionally measure 7.5x15cm with bevelled edges, creating the characteristic shadow lines that define this style. Brick-effect tiles replicate construction materials in ceramic form, offering the texture and appearance of real brick without structural limitations. Both formats work independently or together in coordinated designs.
Kitchens benefit from metro tiles' easy-clean surfaces and classic appearance. Bathrooms gain character through brick-effect accent walls that resist moisture while adding texture. Living spaces use both formats to create feature walls that complement exposed brickwork common in British period properties. White remains the classic choice, but contemporary options include soft greys, sage greens, and muted blues that reflect current interior trends. Matte finishes provide subtle sophistication, while gloss options maximise light reflection in smaller British homes where natural light is precious.
How do you avoid the "dated" appearance sometimes associated with these formats? Modern laying patterns breathe new life into classic shapes. Herringbone arrangements create movement and visual interest. Vertical stacking elongates walls, while horizontal layouts emphasise width. Contrasting grout colours add a contemporary edge to traditional formats.
Tiles Decor combines classic metro and brick tiles with innovative laying techniques and colour options. Their design team helps visualise different approaches, ensuring your chosen format enhances rather than dates your interior scheme.
